WHERE DID THE BASSET HOUND COME FROM?

Around 1500, this short, stocky, and short-legged hairy man came from France. The name of the greyhounds, by the way, comes from the French word “base”, which means “low thing”.

The ancestors of the deerhounds are sniffer dogs, such as the Basset d’Artois and the Basset Normand. This breed was initially developed to hunt small animals such as badgers and hares, in addition to being used in packs to hunt deer.

The friars of St. Hubert Abbey are often held responsible for the development of the Basset Hound we know and love today. They intended to develop a slow-moving race that could be followed during hunts. This dog was known to accompany the commoners on foot at that time, and it was a dog appreciated for its potent nose.

It is believed that between 1800 and 1930 some specimens of the breed were crossed with the Bloodhound to increase their size. However, to this day he remains small and friendly, melting hearts all over the world.

In 1935, the Basset Hound of America was bred in the United States, and the breed was officially recognized by the AKC .
