Origin of the American Hairless Terrier

The origin of this dogs is recent. The race began in the year 1972 in Louisiana, United States, with the birth of a hairless puppy in a rat terrier litter, as a result of an all-natural mutation. The puppy, a woman named Josephine, was raised by her caregivers, Edwin and Willie Scott, in the hope that their offspring would also be born hairless. Because it is such a new breed, to ensure that a good gene pool is maintained, breeding programs with rat terriers are allowed. The keepers’ wish was granted and Josephine had several successive litters in which there were hairless puppies that crossed with each other.

In 1981, they created a base lineage that would later become the new breed of American dogs. This happened as far back as 1998 when the American Rare Breeds Association considered it to be different from the original terrier rat. His name was American Hairless Terrier. A year later, the Canadian Rarities recognized him as a race. The United Kennel Club of the United States did the same in 2004.

The tail is raised. It is medium in length and wider at the base than the tip.

The Colors of dogs

By not having fur, when talking about colour in the American dog we are referring to the skin.

  • White.
  • Spotted white.
  • Spotted in black and white.
  • Brown.
  • Dark brown.

This skin is soft and very delicate. It darkens in the sun and the lighter colour can cause a rash. On the other hand, some puppies of this breed can be born with fur, although it is rare. In these cases, the coat is usually black, brown or grey.

How is the American hairless terrier puppy?

Hairless American Terrier puppies are born with a thin layer of “down” but lose it until they are completely hairless at three months of age. Due to the behavioral and distrust problems that these dogs can have when they become adults, it is essential that during the first weeks of life they have correct socialization to avoid future problems of fear, distrust or aggression towards other people and animals outside their family circle.

American dog Character

These dogs are very lively, fighters, curious, happy and playful, in addition to being very affectionate, considerate, faithful and great adorers of their family. Another point that characterizes them is that they have great adaptability, being easy to live with them in different environments and with different people. These are dogs that have a strong protective instinct on their own, making them excellent guardians or vigilantes. But that is also why they must be properly socialized so as not to attack strangers, whether they are people or animals.

On the other hand, they are active and restless and they love long walks as well as digging and chasing their prey. They require at least 30 minutes of active exercise daily in order not to develop behavioural problems arising from lack of energy release.

Taking care of the Xoloitzcuintle dog

Despite its average size, this dog has great strength and needs for activity, requiring at least 30 minutes of daily exercise to release its energy, whether with games, long walks, runs or walks. An inactive American Hairless Terrier is unhappy, will experience stress or anxiety and the result will be a reduction in quality and life expectancy. For this reason, providing opportunities for them to exercise is one of the main precautions for these dogs.

On the other hand, as we don’t have hair we don’t have to worry about brushing and bathing is much easier and can be done when we see it dirty. However, the downside of the absence of hair is your skin‘s high sensitivity, especially those of lighter coloured specimens. This skin is subject to damage from the sun, extreme cold or heat. Therefore, in the hottest months and during the day, when there are more ultraviolet rays that can reach your skin, you should protect yourself with sunscreen. On the contrary, in the colder months, you should bring dog coats or, if it rains, a raincoat.

The diet must be complete and contain all the nutrients in adequate proportions to maintain the musculature and strength that characterize the American Hairless Terrier. As for hygiene, the ear is important to prevent infections and inflammation, as well as the teeth to avoid oral problems such as periodontal diseases, tartar, cavities and infections.
